Transfer deadline day is upon us, and it’s the most important one for a very long time. This is the transfer window where we were promised lots of spending and big names, where we were assured that the club had money to spend and were willing to do so. So far the only signings have been Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini on free transfers.
But, as I have been saying to people on Twitter for weeks, the window is open until 11pm on the 2nd of September. The fact that it is now that day does make me a little less confident, but I am still optimistic. It is my opinion that Wenger must know that signings are needed, he is not stupid and that things will all work out in the end. I may end up looking naïve, but that’s what I think.
The links are still there. The feeling that Rooney may still leave Man United is still lingering, especially after Rio Ferdinand seemed to suggest something other than an injury was going on when questioned about him today – “It’s disappointing obviously but whatever has happened has happened and we can’t go back now. We have quality players that can fill the void”. Doesn’t really sound like an injury, does it?
Suarez is also still a possibility. He’s still known to want to leave Liverpool, and it’s thought that they’d accept a bid of around £50m. However, it does seem to have gone a bit quiet and given some of the other players we’ve been linked with, I’d be surprised if we do sign him.
Di Maria and Benzema are probably more likely than those two, especially after Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Gareth Bale. This will mean that Di Maria and Benzema will struggle to break into the first team, and so could look for moves elsewhere. Madrid are rumoured to have actually offered Benzema, who Wenger is known to admire.
A slightly less exciting name is the Palermo keeper Viviano. It is being reported that he is flying in for a medical ahead of a loan deal, but is widely expected to act as back up to Szczesny rather than the new first choice keeper we seemed to be looking for earlier in the window.
Now, the man who I’m getting the most excited about. There have been a huge number of reports from several very reliable sources that Mesut Oezil has agreed a deal with Arsenal and is flying in for a medical. There are even reports of an announcement time – 4pm. Oezil is one of my favourite players in the world, a truly world class midfielder, and although he isn’t the defensive midfielder we wanted I would easily pay upwards of £40m for him. Those who follow me on Twitter know how excited I’ve been getting about the possibility of signing him, and if we do complete a deal it will be an absolutely fantastic piece of business by Wenger. He would be by far our best player, truly world class, and every single Arsenal fan should be getting excited about him. I know most of us try not to get our hopes up anymore, but he is seriously worth it.
So, enjoy the ridiculous broadcasting spectacle that is Transfer Deadline Day, and try not to panic too much when it’s 10pm and nothing’s happened. Look on the bright side – we’re not Sp*rs.
